Benefits To the Community

What makes Community Memorial a nonprofit healthcenter?

CMH is a community-owned, nonprofit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees representing our service areas of Brunswick, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg and northern North Carolina.

We operate for the benefit of the community and reinvest all our net income in providing health services for the communities that we serve, rather than to individual owners or shareholders. We provide care to all regardless of their ability to pay.

Our nonprofit 501 (c) 3 status exempts us from most state and federal taxes and allows us to be the recipient of philanthropic donations and grants to provide all community citizens access to health care, maintain a modern, up-to-date facility and keep pace with changes in technology.

Benefits of CMH to the Community:
  • CMH provides comprehensive medical, surgical, behavioral, and long-term care services to meet the health needs of our citizens.
  • CMH is licensed for 99 acute care beds, 161 long-term care beds and 24 behavioral health beds.
  • As one of the area’s largest employers, we have more than 850 people on our staff, not including contract services.

Our commitment to improving our community’s well-being goes beyond the walls of the hospital:

We improve access to healthcare.

As a nonprofit hospital, we provide the health services that citizens need, many of which generate little or no revenue. Such services include a 24-hour, fully staffed emergency department, obstetrics, and physician-based practices and clinics in outlying communities to provide health care to citizens at a local level.

We make priorities of health education and wellness.

We focus on prevention as well as treatment to maximize the long-term health of our citizens. We provide health education and screenings and reach outside the walls of our facility. We continually strive to find new ways to keep people healthy and ways to return them to work more quickly after injury or illness. We partner with area schools, churches, and businesses in health and wellness activities.

We provide care to all, regardlessof their ability to pay.

During the past fiscal year, CMH provided over $3.7 million in charity care and nearly $9 million other uncompensated care.

We make tangible strides in providing new services to our community.

New facilities are here…new ways to help diagnose illness, to cope with injury and to make health care accessible locally. Plans are on the horizon to continue our growth. Our new facilities help where our community hurts most as our regions suffers significantly above the state average in areas such as cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

But there are many other ways that CMH benefits the community:

We strengthen the economic well-being of the community.

  • As one of the area’s largest stable employers, your hospital provides jobs at a wide range of skill levels for more than 850 people from over 12 Virginia and North Carolina localities.
  • Your hospital contributes to the tax base through wages, salaries and benefits totaling nearly $39 million over the past two years.
  • CMH and its employees purchase goods and services locally, creating income and jobs for other businesses in the community.
  • Your hospital helps recruit and retain college graduates, and offers tuition and scholarships for retraining and continuing education.
  • A strong community hospital such as CMH helps to recruit business and industry to the region.
  • CMH supports the communities it serves through active membership in area chambers and sponsorships of community events and youth activities.
